Raumzeichen alpha / Space Sign alpha

There is a small cube at the centre of the “Raumzeichen alpha” sculpture which is central to understanding the artistic concept of Karl Ludwig Schmaltz, who developed his constructive-stereometric sculptures outwards from an inner core, often working with acrylic glass to keep it visible. In this instance, though, he created an openwork geometrical metal structure for the outside space which allows a view of its centre. While the inner form is a cube, the outer is an octahedron. Between the two, the inner form evolves into the outer form and is inscribed into it, which creates an intertwining of surfaces and shapes that is reminiscent of a crystalline structure.

Karl-Ludwig Schmaltz received the Karl-Ernst Osthaus Prize of the City of Hagen in 1968. The artist has created numerous works for public spaces since around 1970. In Hagen, these include, in addition to “Raumzeichen alpha,” “Makrokern” from 1974.
