Reflexionswand / Reflecting Wall

The main material used for Olaf Metzel’s Reflecting Wall is ubiquitous throughout the bicycle friendly city of Münster. This is because it is required that at least two of the very same yellow/amber reflectors be installed 180 degrees apart on the spokes of the front and back wheels of all bicycles.

Located in front of the Landesfeuerwehrschule, the installation looks like a billboard or drive-in theater screen made out of hundreds of safety reflectors. Since it is located on one of Münster’s major access roads, the artist positioned the Reflecting Wall to face oncoming traffic.

Passersby will witness a play of light and color that changes depending on the time of day and evokes associations with a means of avoiding potential dangers.
