Rheingarten Fountain
Sculptor Eduardo Paolozzi chose not to design a traditional fountain in his collaboration with with landscape planner Georg Penker and architect Erich Schneider-Wessling. Instead, he created a large-scale water landscape along a gentle slope in the Rheingarten. The fountain landscape continues the axis that starts at the cathedral, continues through the museum, and diagonally through the park to the Rhine.
The layout incorporates sculptural cut stones that are relics of the old Hohenzollernbrücke, bronze sculptures in abstract architectural designs, and waves and channels formed by paving stones. When water flows through it on summer days, the stones become islands, the bronze elements rise above it like buildings, and it becomes an inviting place for children to play.
