Schwebende Pyramide / Floating Pyramid

Günther Zins’ work manages to almost completely avoid one of sculpture’s main features: physicality. Like a sort of three-dimensional style of line drawing, outlines are all he uses to shape each work. Many of his sculptures are further dematerialized by the fact that they seem to float weightlessly in space.

Installed in the Bunter Garten in 2011, this work is actually held in place by thin, skillfully attached stainless steel cables that are only visible upon closer inspection. Here, the large outline of a pyramid is suspended between the surrounding trees, where it hovers above visitors’ heads.

In addition to its historical and symbolic significance, the pyramid is likely the geometric form that is most associated with heaviness and immovability – that is why this sculpture is particularly surprising: its weightlessness.
