Sitzender Junge / Seated Boy

The sculptor Heinrich Holthaus lived and worked for most of his life in Hagen, where several sculptures in public spaces bear witness to his oeuvre. He was closely attached to his hometown, except for the years from 1946 to 1953 when he lived in Plettenberg. For many years, his studio was at the Cuno Berufskolleg.
“Sitzender Junge” is a simple nude study in a naturalistic, slightly stylised rendering. In a relaxed pose, the boy sits with bent legs on a base slab. He has put one hand around the nearer leg, the other arm rests with its elbow on the knee, the hand lies on the back of his neck. The silhouette thus forms a closed triangle which contributes to the boy’s self-contained and pensive aura. Only the gaze of his slightly raised head goes beyond the triangle formed by his body, as if an outside event had caught his attention. Today, the figure, which was installed at its new location in Volkspark after a period in storage at the Karl Ernst-Osthaus-Museum and restoration in April 2019, faces the fountains.
