Som

Spanish sculptor Andreu Alfaro began working with industrial materials like steel and aluminum in the 1960s. Since 1970, he has been developing a formal language based on the serial repetition of geometric elements. Fanned out arrangements of square steel rods are characteristic of his work, as is the case with this sculpture. Som incorporates steel bars at different heights. The individual bars rise up on either side of a central diagonal, ending in a tall vertical element at each end. This gives the sculpture the appearance of an abstract bird or angel with outstretched wings. Although it is a static structure, it creates the impression of skyward movement. The sculpture also draws its effect from the surrounding space and the viewer’s movement, which intensifies its apparent variability.
