Sonnenseite / Sunny Side

Michael Sailstorfer’s installation offers a “place in the sun” for the residents of the surrounding houses who do not have the privilege of a south-facing balcony. The tall red scaffolding appears to have been built on the grass for this purpose alone – to create equal opportunity for all.

The grid structure surrounds the stairs, which change direction at the first “floor” and then lead to a balcony on the second “floor.” The grid of metal bars continues above the balcony level, making it possible to provide lighting for the structure at night.

Michael Sailstorfer works primarily with everyday materials and uses preexisting situations to develop scenarios that create tension through their mixture of subtle humor and sculptural qualities.
