StattWaage / (In) Place of Scales

Ulrike Kessl’s artworks are often made of everyday objects, such as textiles, which acquire sculptural qualities through her unusual arrangements. Unlike her other works, however, the “StattWaage” is a classic readymade, an object which was not altered but which was turned into a work of art solely by the shift in context. The industrial scales positioned in front of the “Marler Stern” shopping mall are a functional, even interactive sculpture that invites every viewer to use it. Anyone can weigh themselves here and turn the act of determining their body-weight from a private to a public action. The scales are even big enough to weigh whole groups of visitors, allowing them to interact with them in a playful way and make contact with other people. It is likely that this combination of mundane and artistic experience, of private and public space is one reason for the popularity of the “StattWaage” which, after a lengthy period of damage, has now been repaired and has been serving its function reliably again since 2015.
