Steine wie gewebt / Stones Like Weaving Archive

In front of the Kunstkabinett Hespert, which was established in 1991 in an old village school building, a sculpture park gradually developed which was re-named “Platz der Künste” (Arts Square) on the occasion of its 25th anniversary. This is where artist Mary Bauermeister’s ground mosaic can be found. The artist – though active internationally – lived in Rösrath, also in the Oberbergische Kreis, since the 1970s. She became known as a pioneer of the Fluxus movement, for her artistic work with optical lenses, and as a source of inspiration for numerous artists. The stone mosaic, consisting of a collection of round pebbles, embodies the closeness to nature and at the same time the spiritual character of her work. She collected such stones on numerous beaches of the world and sorted them by size, colour, and shape. She then assembled them in spirals, cascades, pyramids, and other reliefs that represent the attempt of all human cultures to produce meaningful order and structure.
