Strukturale Konstellation – Zwei Supraporten / Structural Constellation – Two Supraportes
Josef Albers first showed his famous “Homages to the Square” at the then Westfälisches Landesmuseum in 1986 and was subsequently commissioned to create the overdoors – supraportes – that were installed above the museum entrance on Domplatz, where they remained until renovation works began in 2009. Today they are located on the north façade of the museum facing Pferdegasse.
The “structural constellations” the artist had already worked on in 1954 and 1958 are geometrical lines that at first glance appear to be perspective drawings of three-dimensional bodies. A closer look, however, reveals a visual game of deception with the onlooker’s viewing habits, since the depicted constructions are impossible in reality. Both supraportes are perceived as interlaced cuboids at first, but instinctive attempts to identify an inside and an outside, a front and back fail, which makes our perception tilt repeatedly. This corresponds to the artist’s intention to stimulate a more conscious mode of seeing. In a second step, viewers will compare the two elements, think about the differences between them and thus both qualify and sharpen their perception.
