Steps to the Körne

At the very least, Danuta Karsten’s installation on the sloping bank of the Körnebach has a practical use for anyone who wants to have a picnic there. Along the grassy area leading down to the creek, the artist installed 15 metal frames with wooden planks on top. The legs of each frame are anchored into the ground at different depths, so that the top is a perfectly horizontal surface despite the uneven terrain.

As such, the irregularly sloping bank is provided with terrace like steps that are loosely grouped together, reminiscent of boat docks, as well as tables or benches. This relaxed and playful design enables an entirely new sensory and physical experience of the terrain. Visitors are not only invited to look, wander around, and climb on the installation, but also made aware of how the proverbial ground under their feet determines perception and balance.
