Torbogen / Archway

Having designed numerous buildings there, artist Erwin Heerich’s name is closely associated with Museumsinsel Hombroich, which is located near Grevenbroich. The structures Heerich created for the island can be understood as architectural sculptures.

This sculpture in Grevenbroich also draws from architecture, as it depicts a rectangular doorway within a round archway. The artist reduced this passageway to its most basic geometric elements, so that the sculpture can only exist as a purely abstract, timeless form.

Elevated above all architectural styles, it has a timeless existence. A historical context is incorporated through its distinctive location, which brings together old and new: it is situated in a high-traffic area on Bundesstraße 59, directly across from the oldest preserved part of the historical Grevenbroich city fortifications: the Bernardusturm and the Wilhelmite monastery.
