Two Open Rectangles Excentric Triangular Section, Variation VII
A significant collection of sculptures can be found on the campus of the Ruhr-Universität Bochum, which has been built since 1965, owing to a happy combination of the initiative of the founding director of the Institute of Art History, Max Imdahl, and the public funding of architectural art. This kinetic sculpture by George Rickey, for example, is located at a central position in the forum between the big lecture hall Audimax and the art collections of the RUB. A steel post forks at its upper end with a high, narrow rectangular steel shape attached by a hinge at each end. These two rectangles are moved by the slightest air current, though without touching each other or turning down completely, so that they appear to follow the forces of nature and at the same time be exempt from gravity. The movement creates ever-new constellations of the two intersecting rectangles. The viewers relate to the purposeless, apparently weightless play of elements which, like them, is nevertheless subject to the elements of nature.
