Two Pieces. Reclining Figure No. 1
The ambivalence between the figurative and the abstract is already clear in the title of Henry Moore’s sculpture Two Pieces. Reclining Figure. This work made up of two organically curved, but somewhat abstract elements. Positioned side by side, they make reference to each other visually with their swelling and contracting forms. If they were to be interpreted as human figures, ancient bone or stone sculptures would be first to come to mind. This archaic character is accentuated by the haptic qualities of the rough bronze, which has a patina in some areas, while featuring a play of light and shadow against the matte surface in others.
Moore also seems to have been inspired by his “library of natural forms,” which consisted of an extensive collection of stones, roots, and bones.
