Ungestörtes Wachstum / Undisturbed Growth

Made possible through civic involvement, Skulpturenpark Kettwig opened in 1983 and remains responsible for maintaining the 14 works it has since acquired. The three-part work Undisturbed Growth was created as a collaboration between Eckhard Schichtel and Matz Schulten for the exhibition Baukunst – Essen erlebt Architektur on the occasion of the city’s anniversary in 2002. One year later, it was installed at the sport and cultural center Alter Bahnhof and remains there as a gift from the artists.
The three stelae that form this sculpture are made out of tall rectangular frames, which are open at the top and enclosed at the bottom. Inside each stainless steel frame, there is a green “stalk” that seems to be growing upwards. In this way, this sculpture tells us that “undisturbed growth” in urban space – as in our civilization in general – is only possible in specially protected space.
