Wasserkinetische Plastik / Water-Kinetic Sculpture

Rather than sitting atop a base, the ground beneath Wolfgang Göddertz’s stainless steel fountain is lined with paving stones in a circular formation. As a local, the artist envisioned Ebertplatz as a place to play and seek out refreshment in the sheets of water created by his installation.

A group of 16 pipes towers in the center of the circular sculpture. Half of the pipes spray powerful jets of water against convex circular shields that are mounted atop the other eight tubes. At the bottom, all 16 tubes are bent outwards at right angles. Each of these openings is also paired with a large circular disc that is struck by the water in such a way that it creates a domed sheet of water. When light hits the water, it creates rainbows and prisms.

Water is an important component here and in the sculptor’s other water-kinetic works. It determines not only the form of the sculpture, but also its function and use by the residents and visitors of the square.
