Wasserlichtfeldspiegel / Water Light Field Mirror

The Wasserlichtfeldspiegel / Water Light Field Mirror is located on the southern access ramp from the Stadtbahn to the Bonner Stadthaus, which was built from 1973 to 1977 and inaugurated in 1978. The title already names the sculpture’s most important elements: A group of semi-cylindrical pillars stand atop a stainless steel base plate, which functions as a “mirror” covered in water. Light passes through the “field” of stelae, which capture and reflect it in different directions.

The white stelae are arranged at different heights and at different distances from each other, so that the overall appearance changes depending on the viewer’s location. In its modern simplicity, clarity, and transparency, the sculpture has become a symbol of what the Bonn Republic was striving for at that time.
