What’s Behind the Wall?
At first, Japanese artist Shiro Matsui’s “enigmatic” installation may seem inconspicuous, but then it playfully devotes itself to one of the most important human impulses – curiosity. A copper funnel embedded in the wall provides a view through to the otherwise hidden space behind it.
However, this glimpse from public into private space is misleading and viewers are quickly disappointed, since there is only another wall on the other side. Perhaps this work is an ironic commentary on curious exploration itself: if you don’t learn anything about the object of interest, then curiosity can at least contribute to determining your own stance or position.
