Gerhard Marcks portrays the legendary singer and poet Orpheus from Greek mythology in a moment of contemplation. He is standing upright with his head slightly tilted and leaning against his violin bow \u2013 it\u2019s as if he wants to actively focus before playing or is listening for the last fading notes of his song. The instrument is also elegantly raised.<\/p>\n
He is clearly dressed like a figure from antiquity; however, instead of the mythological lyre, he is playing a violin, giving the mythological figure a timeless sensibility and making him into a possible role model for contemporary musicians.<\/p>\n
Gerhard Marcks\u2019s fascination with the subject of Orpheus \u2013 who could charm the gods and all living things with his art and attempted to liberate his beloved Eurydice from the underworld \u2013 is further evidenced by a series of woodcuts that were published in
