Concrete artist Max Bill repeatedly returned to basic geometric shapes in his work. In this sculpture, he develops the basic shape of a cylinder into the form of a classic column. A wider cylindrical form serves as a platform and pedestal for the work, while two matching smaller cylinders make up the base and the capital of the stone column.<\/p>\n
The column itself develops with an increasingly complex twisting movement: the lower stone segment has 3 sides, giving it a triangular outline, while the upper section of the column has a hexagonal footprint.<\/p>\n
The sculpture resembles a twisted column, such as those found in classic antiquity, and Romanesque and Baroque art.
