Aachen

THE AACHEN CULTURAL REGION
WORLD HERITAGE, NATIONAL PARK, AND THE CRADLE OF EUROPE!

The administration union of the Aachen region brings together the greater Aachen region, the districts of Düren, Euskirchen, and Heinsberg, and the city of Aachen. The Aachen cultural region has over 2000 years of history to look back on and is the German partner of the Meuse–Rhine Euroregion.

Aachen is situated between the High Fens-Eifel National Park in the south, the Jülich Börde in the north, and the Cologne/Bonn region in the east. Along with its unique diversity of cultures and landscapes, Aachen is characterized by its lively university and arts scenes. The region’s energetic cultural engagement is reflected in its internationally renowned classical music and visual arts events and institutions, including a combined total of around 100 museums and collections in Heimbach, Düren, and Heinsberg. Relics of its fascinating past document how the region transformed from industrial to future-oriented and visionary – Aachen is a modern technological center with world-famous facilities. Shared borders with neighboring areas in Belgium and the Netherlands have led to the creation of a collaborative network of five partner regions that have been working together for many years. In turn, this three-country region offers a charming exchange of traditions, outlooks, and languages. As part of a model European region, promoting regional and cross-border cultural activities between Aachen, Maastricht, Lüttich, Hasselt, and Eupen has been a priority from the start.
