Turf Circle
The landscape, its existing materials, and his own body are enough to shape land artist Richard Long’s entire oeuvre. Still, he was the only artist to be nominated four times for the prestigious Turner Prize and then also received it in 1989. Long took the production of art from the studio out into nature by moving through the landscape – often on far-reaching hikes – and then documenting this movement through minimal interventions. As part of a 1969/70 solo exhibition, Long embedded a circle into the grass in the garden at Haus Lange. The work is an early example of one of his Turf Circles. The curvature of the geometric ring protrudes just slightly from the ground and has the same grass surface as the surrounding lawn. Nonetheless, it subtly changes the viewer’s experience of the landscape and unites natural and artistic life.
