Das Dazwischen / The In Between

This wall sculpture by Norbert Radermacher was created as part of a project series on autonomous contemporary art in sacred spaces in Paderborn with a focus on location-based art: a work is not added to a given location, but instead the space and the artistic intervention form a new sensory experience together.
This artwork can be found on Dompropsteigasse, a walled alleyway at the junction between the historic Domplatz and the civil city. The two bowl-shaped cavities are carved into the stone walls directly across from each other at a point where the street becomes more narrow.
It is a work that doesn’t impose itself onto the viewer, but instead waits to be discovered. Only then does a new definition of the location emerge: the space between the two elements gains significance, causing the viewer to pause and consider the surroundings, as well as the emptiness and silence.
