Scent Tunnel
Olafur Elíasson is internationally acclaimed for his installations that deal with physical laws, perception, nature, and art. For this installation in Gütersloh, he created a work dedicated to the sense of smell, a somewhat neglected topic when it comes to art. A latticed steel frame forms a twelve-sided tunnel and serves as a support for a number of highly fragrant plans.
There are well-known species, such as rose and lavender, but also unidentified and exotic plants: Alyssum montanum, convallaria majalis, viola odorata, ilium candidium, narcissus poeticus, and lonicera japonica. Together they create a Scent Tunnel that transmits a constantly changing scent experience depending on where you are standing, the weather, and the season. In the same year, Elíasson created another Scent Tunnel for the Weltausstellung Expo 2000 in Wolfsburg.
