Egypt
Eduardo Paolozzi is considered one of the founders of British pop art. Later in his career, he created complex mechanist fantasy scenarios, depicting mainly the scientific developments and industrial technologies of the post-war era.
The bronze sculpture Egypt is an oversized open hand. On top of the palm, which is constructed in tiered levels, there are architectural models, as well as a pair of mating grasshoppers. The hand is also holding a ball between its fingers, as if it were playing with a marble.
This ball has visible technoid elements and could represent anything from a bomb to a globe. For Egypt, Paolozzi not only uses Egyptian art as a source of inspiration, but also Egyptian culture as an example of a highly technologically developed civilization.
