Ferro spezzato – Blocco

This sculpture is part of Giuseppe Spagnulo’s ferri spezzati / broken iron series, which he began developing in 1972. In these works, he understands solid, closed, and geometric structures as images of the prevailing form of society that must be broken down. As such, this sculpture is an enormous, heavy block of steel that the artist has divided diagonally into two halves with a torch.
The two resulting triangles remain connected, making it clear that they were once halves of a cube. The deep incision is perceived as a violent intrusion that was caused by great force. The change in form seems like an injury and an expression of liberation at the same time.
