Gate (white)
Since the late 1970s, Michael Craig-Martin has been drawing and painting text and every day objects with fine outlines and bold colors. Composed of lines and surfaces, the works don’t contain the slightest suggestion of depth and are reminiscent of pop art or comics. The artist doesn’t depict people, but objects made by people. His public artwork is no different. In connection with his exhibition in Haus Esters und Haus Langen, he created an outdoor piece that now remains in sculpture garden. The artist uses his characteristic outlines here to depict the gate of a garden fence. The sculpture is made out of white coated steel. Hovering out in nature, the fence looks inoperable and almost immaterial. In addition to being able to see between the slats, like on any normal fence, viewers can also look through them, since they are only drawn as contours. This results in a disorienting puzzle of positive and negative forms, as well as two and three dimensional visual elements.
