Licht unter der Brücke / Light under the Bridge

Günter Dohr’s numerous installations in the public spaces of the Ruhr area only become visible in darkness: He often chose previously bleak and inhospitable sites for his works, in which light always played the chief part. Herne even boasts two of his works on Bahnhofstraße. While the Light Gate marks the shopping street, another installation illuminates the railway underpass at the station. Here, a double strip of lights emits an even light, while rectangular light boxes, arranged singly or in groups of two and with coloured back-lighting are integrated into a cladding wall of polished granite. This gives structure and rhythm to the long and monotonous passageway. While the granite wall is divided into sections by perpendicular elements, the light surfaces resemble notes on an imaginary musical score.
