Lichtung zu Einem / Clearing of One

This sculpture group is made up of four seemingly randomly arranged spheres, as well as four cuboids that have been joined together to form a block. The ensemble gives structure to the open space between the buildings and encourages visitors to spend some time there and reflect. This structure is first dictated by the different types of pavement and a path that accentuates the axes. The large four-part block is located at the point where the axes meet. The edges of the individual smaller blocks form a cross that makes reference to the path, as well as the neighboring church. The four asymmetrically arranged spheres seem to create a force field in the space where passersby move between them. The spheres were made out of steel cuboids that were hammered countless times to give them their current shape. The artist developed this technique so that he could forge spheres with a diameter greater than one meter. With the enigmatic title, the artist stimulates the viewer’s imagination, while also illustrating how the different elements come together to form a greater whole.
