Line of Beauty – das fünfte Klärwerk / The Fifth Treatment Plant
This land-art project represents three of the Seseke’s various former incarnations: Susanne Lorenz has simultaneously evoked the Seseke from before it was straightened in 1920, the Seseke as a sewage canal in the time after that, and the Seseke as a largely renatured river. The historic course of the river is traced here in wood as a curvy contour line. The wood also denotes a segment of the river where aquatic plants clean the water. The bicycle path above the sculpture repeats this curved line and becomes a marker of the artist’s intervention in the river.
As a concept that has existed since antiquity (if not longer), Line of Beauty – the Fifth Treatment Plant follows the tradition of bringing together the beautiful (the form) with the practical (cleaning the water). The beauty’s form remains a question: Is the beauty here the clearly designed element? Or is it the nature that is being defined?
