Donald Judd is considered one of the most important artists of American minimalism. For the first Skulptur-Projekte in 1977, he designed a sculpture out of two concentric concrete rings on one of the gently sloping meadows around the Aasee. The outer ring is aligned with the slope of the ground, while the inner ring is horizontally aligned with the horizon and the water.
In its reduced formal language, the sculpture creates a “topographical regulator in the shape of two concrete circles” (Donald Judd). Regarding public art, the artist remarked: “The categories of “public” and “private” have no meaning to me. The quality of a work can not be changed by the conditions under which it is exhibited, nor the number of people looking at it.”
