The facade design along the exterior of the multistory parking garage for the newly constructed Justizzentrum is a classic Kunst-am-Bau project; however, Swiss artist Rémy Zaugg interpreted it in his own, unconventional way. At this point, the artist had already worked with architects Herzog & de Meuron on several occasions. In order to provide the Aachen parking garage (Weinmiller Architekten, Berlin) with natural ventilation, the 2,500 precast concrete exterior elements were staggered on a steel frame, leaving open spaces between them.
The material was colored to match the strong red brickwork of the older surrounding buildings. The garage structure itself is simple and cubic. Easily legible words are inscribed in capital letters along the concrete elements. The artist selected adjectives and verbs for the front of the building and nouns for the long side, inviting passersby create their own combinations. This facade design allows for a completely new “reading” of the building. Furthermore, it draws attention to the power of words, especially in this legal context.
