Untitled

K. L. Schmaltz’s work focuses on stereometric figures, which are — as distinguished from pure surface geometry — geometric objects in three-dimensional space. He is particularly interested in constructions that develop outward from a central point.
In order to make this center visible, the artist has worked with materials like acrylic glass. Although it is made of aluminum, the sculpture in Willich is also constructed based on the same concept. It is a multi-sided geometric form made up of intersecting square surfaces.
The artist employs a construction principle that appears related to inorganic nature, such as the formation of crystals. A microcosm that we can otherwise only see through a microscope is made visible here and draws from basic geometric design principles found in art and nature.
