Porscheplatz
The sculptor Meuser chose his childhood nickname as the nom de plume under which he became famous. According to him, the sculpture “Porscheplatz,” too, contains a reminiscence to his childhood, when there was still a fun fair on Essen’s Porscheplatz: It evokes the seesaw or swingboat that he used to see there. Today, the sculpture is located in Glückauf Park between Rüttenscheider and Bismarckstraße, diagonally opposite the Folkwang Museum. Painted a bright orange, two identical trapezoid steel plates are arranged on a slightly curved steel element as if balancing on a seesaw. In fact, the equally monumental and fragile-looking construction is firmly anchored to the ground. Meuser frequently works found objects, often iron and steel elements, into sculptures and material assemblages. Objects he mainly finds at scrapyards are further deformed, welded together, sometimes painted over and combined into abstract units. “Meuser’s works also acquire narrative and representational attributes through their humorous and at the same time poignant titles. Similar to the found and assembled scraps, the titles of his works are also found objects – scraps of words and sentences taken out of their original context and recycled. In combination with the respective works, new fields of association and contexts of meaning open up that place Meuser’s works in a field of tension between banality and poetry.” (Galerie Grässlin)
