Stein – Zeit – Mensch / Stone – Time – Human
Constructed out of tree trunks and a massive boulder, this sculpture looks as if it has been part of the landscape since the dawn of time. In addition to the materials used, this effect is further emphasized by the sculpture’s location and setting, which Nils-Udo expressly incorporates in his work: “My work occupies the entire width of the forest between the two trails, as well as a length of at least 200 meters in front of and 100 meters behind the respective rows of trunk columns,” the artist explained.
All of the surroundings appear to be relevant to the sculpture. In fact, the artist found the 150-ton boulder in the Raumland quarry and had it painstakingly transported onto the mountain. The boulder now rests atop a base and is surrounded by massive tree trunks. These trunks have been used to create a temple-like structure of columns and architraves, with the boulder taking the place of a shrine. Furthermore, the stone here also encourages passing hikers to consider notions of time and nature.
