Tor II / Gate II

Daniel Buren originally designed four gates to be temporarily exhibited for the 1987 Skulptur Projekte. They were installed in four locations that were specifically chosen to make the long forgotten boundaries between the church and community / clergy and citizens visible again. However, rather than forming new boundaries, the gates create connections: in contrast to the barrier that the red and white striped pattern might suggest, the artist constructed open gates, which invite visitors to pass through, while creating an awareness of the border crossing. This aspect, as well as the work’s inherent invitation to consider the changeability of borders and their meaning, makes it current and topical. The gate on Domgasse remained there for a long time after its initial installation in 1987, but had to be dismantled in 2013 due to a lack of stability. It was reinstalled in 2016 with the financial support of the Brück group.
