Two Spheres

“Represent nothing. Depict nothing. Just follow the forces that link the inside with the outside.” This is artist Ingo Ronkholz’s goal in his practice, whose focus shifted from drawing to sculpture over the course of his career. Always working in traditional techniques, he was not concerned with representation but with an abstract sculptural setting that defines itself and its surroundings. This is also demonstrated in the two perforated iron spheres which were relocated in agreement with the artist. They used to be situated in the interior courtyard of the von Scheibler house until they were installed on the redesigned area in front of the music school. Now the two corresponding spheres, each weighing 600 to 800 kilograms, lie on a wood-covered brick base suggesting a pedestal. The recesses in the massive spheres lend them an apparent lightness, as if they consisted merely of coiled iron bands. At the same time, the views inside and through them contribute to the connection between the inside and the outside and their surroundings postulated by the artist.
