vis-à-vis

Heide Weidele created vis-à-vis as part of the art project Blickwechsel, which was initiated by the Kultursekretariat NRW Gütersloh. The artist was tasked with changing the appearance of a seemingly familiar environment through small public interventions.

Weidele focused on an inconspicuous wall across from the kleine Marienkirche Stiftsruine. Even people from Lippstadt are unlikely to know that it was the western wall of the synagogue that was burned down during Kristallnacht on November 9, 1938.

The artist painted a large section of the wall with white paint, leaving the outline of a menorah and an almond blossom. Weidele’s work reminds us that this rather desolate place was once a festive, spiritual location.
