Zwei gleich groß / Two of Equal Size

Edgar Gutbub’s abstract sculpture was created as part of the Unter der Erde symposium that was organized by the arts association for the 750th anniversary of the city of Wesel. The artists were invited to explore the city’s history, which, due to the destruction of World War II, can only be reconstructed through archaeological remains.

Edgar Gutbub’s concrete artwork explores this phenomenon with its completely abstract formal language, free of representational references. The sculpture consists of a quadrilateral stainless steel prism with a three-dimensional parallelogram on top. The top section is open on its narrow sides and provides a view into its interior, which is divided into ascending and descending triangles by a diagonal stainless steel plate. While the exterior of the sculpture has retained the silver color of the stainless steel, the interior walls of the upper cavities are colored. One opening is a bright, sunny yellow and the other a darker blue.

Edgar Gutbub’s sculpture is still in a temporary location and not in the large archway of the citadel as the artist had planned.
